Zelda: Triforce Showdown is a collectible card game set in the universe of The Legend of Zelda.
My goal with this project was to create a TCG concept that feels consistent with Nintendo’s original world, capturing both the aesthetic and the gameplay elements specific to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
In this game, each player has a deck of 63 cards:
45 main deck cards
12 shrine cards
1 Divine Beast
2 heroes
3 Triforce fragments
To win the game, a player must either be the last one with their hero still alive on the battlefield, or complete their Triforce before the other players. Each Triforce fragment comes with its own objective, more or less complex depending on the deck. Once an objective is completed, you can forge that fragment, granting you a bonus for the rest of the game. This system rewards players for their efforts while also giving those who are behind a chance to gain meaningful advantages.
At the start of each turn, the player draws a card and reveals a shrine. Shrines are kept in a separate face-down deck and can be exhausted to generate essence of their respective color.
This gameplay loop represents world exploration: just like in BOTW and TOTK, the more you explore and discover shrines, the more actions you can perform—summoning warriors or using support cards.
Essence colors are directly tied to the races of the world: Rito essence, Goron essence, Gerudo essence, and so on. Each race and essence has its own identity, playstyle, and strategy, always inspired by how they are represented in the games.
Finally, the last major gameplay element adapted from the Zelda series is the Divine Beasts. Divine Beasts are powerful cards that function like warriors and are always accessible to the player, but at a very high cost. Their unique feature is that they can be placed either in the shrine zone or on the battlefield. This mirrors their role in the games, where Divine Beasts are both creatures and sanctuaries. Depending on where they are placed, their effects will change.
