Strokes of Madness is a maze game where the player must find the exit from a non-linear maze. To help himself, he has only two interactions. With the left click, he can draw on all surfaces, as he wishes. In order to find his way through this labyrinth where everything is similar, he will have to use this ability to map the environment and mark his passage. The second interaction allows the player to change their gravity point by looking at a wall and right-clicking. Thanks to these two interactions, he has total control over his exploration: the ceiling can become the ground, and he can annotate each surface freely.
The goal of the game is to create an original and disturbing experience, where the player tries to find his way in a level design that seems unreal. Between the portals and the changes in gravity, it is impossible to orient oneself without marking one’s passage. The level design is non-linear: the player can go to the end instantly, but also return directly to the beginning. This avoids the illusion of progression, where the player would think they are moving forward while remaining in the same area, thus encouraging them to map the entire maze.
The main challenge of this game, beyond the technical aspects related to portals and gravity changes, was the level design. We had to imagine a perfectly symmetrical environment, visible and playable from all possible angles. Thinking about the player’s pathfinding with six potential points of view was a real challenge.
In the final prototype, we managed to create a singular and confusing experience. Between the changes of perspective and a level design that repeats itself, the game drives players crazy as well as level designers.
